Total Video Converter is a program that takes any video file and converts it to another type of file. This conversion can come in handy for creating files that can be played on portable media devices such as a tablet or smartphone. The program can also be used to extract audio from a video file to be played back as an audio only file. The most common use for a video converter is to convert larger video files taken from a camera or phone to be uploaded to the internet. Larger files tend to take much longer to upload than smaller ones and some websites have size limits. Converting down allows for greater compression which makes the file size smaller.

Using Total Video Converter

The program is fairly straight forward and easy to use. You can either browse for files using the program or drag-and-drop them directly from your computer. You choose a destination location where the new file will be saved, choose the type of file you want to convert, then press the convert button on the top of the window. The display shows conversion statistics such as time and percentage as well as the difference in size. You can convert multiple files at once by creating a list. This is done by placing multiple files into the conversion window.

Types of Conversions

There is a rather substantial list of recommended pre-set conversions. These are represented by the type of device you intend on viewing the file. These settings are recommended settings and can be adjusted as needed. You can also create conversion profiles and save them to suit your needs. Multiple formats are supported, including converting MKV files to MP4.

Supported formats:

Audio: CDA, FLAC, MP3, MP2, RA, WAV, WMA, Ogg, AMR, AC3, AU and SWF.

Editing Tools

Total Video Converter has a wide range of editing tools that allow you to chop, mix, and merge video files to be converted into a single video of your choosing. While this is convenient, it does tend to bog down a computer. The video editing tools only make this worse, which renders those tools practically useless. The video preview option also puts a strain on the system, causing the program to crash or freeze up. Your success rate greatly depends on the computer that you are using, but after doing a test of the program using a Windows7 64-bit laptop with 16 GB of memory and an Intel i5 -2.33ghz processor, system resources would still get locked up.

Overall Assessment

For a free video conversion program, this software is effective. It supports numerous formats and converts quickly. This is at the expense of system resources making the ability to multitask while converting nearly impossible.

  • Drains system resources
